Parent Appreciation Day 2019

In this STEM Challenge, students and parents were to build a model of an igloo. An igloo is an ice house built from ice and snow in very cold places. They are usually a dome-shaped building.
They had to make a circular igloo with a domed roof and an opening with a tunnel. The short tunnel helps control the temperature inside an actual igloo.
The materials included cotton balls, cardboard tubes, paper plates, glue and tape.
We had a lot of clever ideas!

Biomes

Students learned about Earth's main biomes and which types of plants and animals inhabit these environments.
Students discovered that a biome is a large ecosystem that has its own types of animals, plants and soil. They also have their own unique patterns of temperature and rainfall.
The tundra is a cold a cold, dry biome without trees and the ground is frozen all year.

Students created their assigned biome with a partner displaying the vegetation, animals and soil.
The taiga is a cool forest biome that also contains lakes and ponds and is the largest in the world.
Deciduous forests have trees that lose their leaves every year. They often have cold winters and warm summers.
Tropical rain forests are hot and damp with plenty of  rainfall.
A grassland is a biome where the main kind of plant is grass. Grasslands do not get much rainfall.
A desert is a barren biome with very little rainfall. They can be hot or cold.
Students worked in pairs to research one of the biome locations and wrote a summary of the location and characteristics that made up their particular biome.

Thanksgiving and Christmas 2018

We were all blessed and felt very thankful to spend this time with one another.

Students brought in canned goods to donate to the food pantry for those in need as a way to give back to our community.
Socks For Hope

Our wonderful class moms made it possible for us to enjoy two delicious feasts for the holidays. Yum!!
Students placed several different toiletries in socks for the homeless.
We were all fortunate to celebrate the Christmas season together and also remember those in need.

Straw Roller Coaster

Students worked in small groups to build a straw roller coaster for a ping pong ball using straws, hot glue, tape,
and a piece of cardboard for a base.

Everyone had a great time creating a path for their ball. Each track has sets of two straws that hold the ball as it rolls.
This was a great project for small groups. It was helpful to have classmates hold the straws in place in order to make this STEM challenge a success.

Straws were cut into smaller pieces to help support the vertical straws that hold up the track.
Everyone was able to create a strong, sturdy track with ramps and turns that allowed the ping pong ball to roll down to the bottom and land in a bowl or a plastic lid.
Every group had to experiment with each section before gluing it to make sure it was going to work.
Students chose to start building at the top and worked their way down to the bottom and discovered that this worked well.

Building An Animal Cell

This animal cell activity helped students identify the main organelles that make up an animal cell.
Students cut out the name and function tag, glued them to toothpicks and properly labeled each organelle.
Styrofoam balls were used to represent the animal cell.

Students used Play-Doh and modeling clay to create each organelle
After learning about animals cells and creating them in colorful detail on paper, students thoroughly enjoyed building a 3-D version and the results were amazing!

Super Survivor Assembly 2018

The Super Survivor Environmental Game Show presented learning in an adventurous way!
The Illusion Maker asked trivia questions and students participated in various games.
The students formed two tribes and tried to survive by answering Castaway Questions.
Everyone learned how litter affects the environment, and what we can do to stop it.
We watched in amazement as the magic came alive right before our very eyes!
Students learned more about Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and E-waste in an exciting, fun-filled way during this program.
Students left the show with many new ideas as to how they and their families can help take care of our environment.

Plant Cells

Students use modeling clay, Play-Doh, buttons, paint, toothpicks and pipe cleaners to create a 3 dimensional plant cell.

Students identified the 10 main organelles that make up a plant cell.
