Save the Penguin!

In this STEM activity, students had to design and build an iceberg for their penguin to jump on and float away from the polar bear!
Groups of students tested out their icebergs with the penguin Dixie cups.
Each group came up with their own unique design for the icebergs. Printable penguins were taped to a Dixie cup and then placed on top of the icebergs.
Students used Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, string and tape to build an iceberg.
We used a tray of water to act as the Arctic Sea. Every group was successful and able to see their penguins float away from the polar bear predator.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Play

3rd, 4th and 5th grade students participated in the presentation of Our Lady of Guadalupe play.
All of the students did a wonderful job.
We recalled the time when Mary appeared to Juan Diego and asked him to build a church.
Juan Diego explained to the bishop the wonderful thing that had happened but he asked for a sign from God to prove that what he said was true.
When Juan Diego opened his cloak, a picture in shining colors of the Lady herself appeared in place of the sweet-smelling roses he was carrying.
People all over North and South America still turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe for protection.

Landforms

Our class learned about landforms, or shapes of Earth's surface.
Students made dioramas using shoeboxes, paint, modeling clay and various materials.
Students made mountains, hills, valleys, plateaus, volcanoes and oceans out of clay.
We learned how people adapt to landforms and water in their communities.

Everyone had a fun learning and building each landform.
All of our dioramas look terrific!

Observe Stems

Students have been studying plants and their parts in Science.
We have been discussing how roots and stems help plants.
Students discovered how roots take in water, nutrients, and hold the plant in place.
Students learned how the stem holds the plant upright so its leaves can take in sunlight..
Students observed how material is transported through a plant stem using celery stalks with leaves, water, and jars with blue food coloring.

Students noticed colored water moving up the celery stalks.
We observed that the colored water rises through the stem and eventually colored the leaves and that stems transport materials throughout the plant.
